Several VMASC project scientists were out at Haven Creek Boat Ramp in Norfolk, VA recently to test the WAM–V (Wave Adaptive Modular Vessel) – an autonomous, versatile platform with a useful payload that exceeds 250 pounds and can be used to test experiment and validate a variety of concepts and maritime operations.
The last time the WAM–V was in the water was almost 4 years ago, largely due to the pandemic. This test was to ensure that all mechanical, electrical, propulsion and communication systems still operate as expected. The test was 100% successful, paving the way for augmenting onboard sensors with a side-scanning sonar that will be used to test autonomous survey of navigation channels and additional port related support functions.
